Research Proposal Pathogen Evolution

Food Security in a Changing Climate

A Research Proposal Investigating Plant Disease Adaptation Under Rising Temperatures

The Question

How might plant pathogens adapt to rising temperatures, and what could those changes mean for future food security?

Climate change is altering ecosystems around the world, including the relationships between crops and the diseases that affect them. Because agriculture depends on healthy plant systems, understanding how pathogens respond to changing environmental conditions is critical for protecting future food production.

This project explored how rising temperatures may influence pathogen evolution and disease dynamics in agricultural systems.

My Approach

I designed a research framework using the model plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae to investigate how temperature affects the activation of disease-causing mechanisms.

The proposed research incorporated:

  • Literature review of plant-pathogen interactions
  • Climate change and agricultural risk assessment
  • Experimental evolution methods
  • Comparative genomics
  • Research design and hypothesis development

The goal was to identify potential genetic adaptations that could allow pathogens to remain successful as environmental conditions change.

Key Insights

Climate change affects more than crops.

Agricultural resilience depends not only on how plants respond to warming temperatures, but also on how pests and pathogens adapt.

Biological systems are constantly evolving.

As environmental conditions shift, pathogens may develop new strategies that alter the timing and success of infections.

Food security depends on anticipating future risks.

Understanding possible evolutionary responses before they occur can help researchers and agricultural systems prepare more effectively.

Research design is a critical tool for addressing uncertainty.

Complex environmental challenges often require carefully designed investigations that connect biology, agriculture, and climate science.

Proposed Research

The proposal examined whether higher temperatures could drive the evolution of pathogen virulence under conditions where infection would normally be suppressed.

The research framework included:

  • Experimental Evolution – Testing how pathogen populations adapt when exposed to higher temperatures over multiple generations
  • Genomic Analysis – Identifying genetic changes associated with successful adaptation
  • Agricultural Implications – Evaluating how evolving pathogen behavior may influence crop health and food production.

Skills Demonstrated

  • Research Design
  • Literature Review
  • Scientific Writing
  • Experimental Design

  • Climate Change Research

This project reflects my interest in how environmental change shapes food systems and public wellbeing. It demonstrates my ability to move beyond summarizing existing research and design investigations that explore unanswered questions. It highlights an interest that continues to inform my work: understanding how complex systems respond to change and what those responses mean for people and communities.

Deliverable: Scientific Research Proposal

My academic training and early professional experience began in plant biotechnology, driven by an interest in improving food security through agricultural innovation. Initially, I was drawn to questions of crop productivity, genetics, and disease resistance. Over time, however, I began to understand that food security is often as much a distribution challenge as a production one.

Research questions about plant disease, climate adaptation, and agricultural resilience gradually connected me to broader questions about food systems, sustainability, and public health. This project reflects that transition, exploring how climate-driven changes in plant pathogens may influence future food security. It demonstrates my interest in connecting scientific research to larger human and environmental challenges, an approach that continues to shape my work today.
